Make Recycling Economically Sustainable

The City of Cleveland began their partnership with Greenstar Pittsburgh in January of 2010. When we began working together the City was paying processing and transportation fees that were so high that they were in danger of not being able to continue their recycling programs.  Through the combined efforts of Commissioner Ron Owens and Greenstar representatives, the City of Cleveland was at the forefront of implementing a system of revenue sharing that will enable their programs to flourish and be sustainable long into the future.

Established for Long-Term Sustainability

Cleveland began its single-stream program on a trial basis. The program proved to be incredibly successful and the City experienced significant growth in its recycling volumes. Today it is working on making single-stream recycling available for all of their residents and have been working with Greenstar to provide a drop off location for surrounding communities to enable them to share in their success.

In the short time since the City and Greenstar began working together, recycling volumes have increased by 60% and they are well on their way to doubling the amount of materials they recover. Their flexibility and willingness to adapt to environmental and economic needs has enabled the City of Cleveland to develop programs that encourage growth and success, and they are well on their way to obtaining their goal of being one of the most efficient and successful recycling cities in the country.
